Following-up last year's First Third releases, in May 2023 we bring you four fresh new tracks from Cardiff-based artist Christian Gates.

Gathered under the gnomic title ‘i0’, these tracks were made over the last year using a mix of hardware samplers, synths, and software. Christian explains: “They use my favourite hardware synth, the Yamaha TG33. It’s from the early ‘90s and uses a mix of 12-bit samples and FM vector synthesis. It has this lovely gritty texture, which I’ve used here alongside more modern software synths, made by Fors, to create contrast.”

'i0' explores a recurrent theme in Christian's music. “The components in each of the tracks are subtly asymmetrical," he adds, "so that the patterns of each element of a track are not locked alongside each other, but very slightly shift around to different relative positions.”

“These tracks are more up-front than the two First Third releases I put out last year (‘Salvage’ and ‘1,2’), so using my older Valley Lines moniker made more sense,” Christian adds. “For these tracks, brevity is key. I didn’t want anything to outstay its welcome.”
